Leadership Oconee County is a 10-month program designed for community leaders to increase their knowledge of Oconee County.






History of Leadership Oconee County


LOC launched in 2006 with support from a group of business leaders. The program provides participants the opportunity to explore all the facets of Oconee County and develop an increased awareness of and provide a rationale for involvement in current issues, opportunities and problems affecting Oconee County.  LOC is a program of and falls under the entity of the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce.  


Goals of Leadership Oconee County

  • Identify and select highly motivated community leaders to participate in the program
  • Systematically challenge participants to become aware of, to examine, and to respond to the social and economic needs of the community
  • Create a dialogue and sense of teamwork among participants and other community leaders
  • Identify opportunities for community involvement for placement of participants and alumni

Program Overview

The 10-month program begins with a full day of orientation the first Friday in August. At orientation, participants take part in leadership activities and identify class roles.  The following full day sessions occur the first Friday of each month and conclude with a graduation ceremony in May. Participants will visit and learn about different parts of Oconee County. Sessions are facilitated by the Leadership Oconee County Advisory Committee. The topics covered include:

 1.       August - Orientation

 2.       September - Community Involvement

 3.       October - Health and Human Services

 4.       November - Justice System and Local Government

 5.       December - Education

 6.       January - Media

 7.       February - Fine Arts & Culture Heritage

 8.       *March - State Government

 9.       April - Economic Development, Tourism, and Recreation

10.     *May - Class Project Presentation and Graduation


Please note: months with a * do not typically meet the first Friday of the month

Class participants are allowed a maximum of two absences to be eligible for graduation.
